Nazeem Mohamed

Deputy Chair, Federation of African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations

Nazeem Mohamed is the Head of the Pharmaceutical Sector for IPS, the for profit part of the Aga Khan Development Network, and until recently was the CEO at Kampala Pharmaceutical Industries (KPI), a regional generic manufacturer located in Uganda. Nazeem is former vice-president of strategic product development at Novo Nordisk, based originally in Denmark and then in Belgium.

He also worked for several leading multinational companies such as Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline before his appointment as CEO of KPI. He worked mostly in international marketing management and strategic product development with these multi-national companies living and working in the UK, Belgium, Denmark and the USA. He completed secondary and University education in the UK, after being forced to leave his native Uganda in the early 70s.

In 2001, he completed the International Executive Management Programme at INSEAD south of Paris, France. In 2003, Nazeem was approached by IPS to come to Uganda to run KPI. It was an out of the blue opportunity to return home and give something back to his country. So, in May 2003 he came back to Uganda with his family and now is the Head of the Pharmaceutical Sector for IPS which is the for profit part of AKDN, which also includes a state of the art extraction and purification facility in Athi river, near Nairobi focused on the production of Artemisinin a key component in the treatment of malaria.

Nazeem is currently the Chairman of the Federation of East African Pharmaceutical Manufacturer (FEAPM) and the Vice Chair of the Federation of African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (FAPMA)
